“Journalism and Technology: Opportunity or Challenge?”

The main aim of this talk is to present how technology has developed and changed journalism. The speech will be focused on 1) the way people, especially the younger generations, are being informed, 2) the role of the technology companies in terms of news distribution and digital advertising, 3) the credibility of the traditional media and how they are trying to adjust to the digital environment. Practical questions and ethical dilemmas will be analyzed, such as: What is the role of the journalists and what is the position of the audience in the digital age? How does “conversational journalism” change news delivery? Why is it important to safeguard quality journalism and journalism ethics online? How can technology contribute to the evolution of journalism?

Biography:

Despina Afentouli is an accomplished journalist with postgraduate studies in journalism and a doctorate in sociology. She has extended experience in mass media, government sectors and academia; several of her contributions as journalist or public relations expert, relate at different time periods, to prestigious organizations such as the Onassis Cultural Center NY, UNESCO, CNN  International, ANT1, and other.
