Interview to the journalist Aggeliki Ragkousi<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despina Afentouli is the first regional councilor of Eastern Attica of the majority party with 5.875 votes. At the municipal elections of 2006 and in the age of 25 years old, she was elected second in row at the Dionyssos Municipality. She has participated in the Program on inmates\u2019 rehabilitation at Wandsworth Prison in London and in 2004 was honored for her philanthropic contribution by Mrs Cherie Blair. She has a distinguished resume in studies, work, and activity in her assets and most importantly, she is in the mood to offer in Eastern Attica.<\/em><\/p>\n

  1. The fact that you are elected first in votes as regional councilor of Eastern Attica, Mrs. Afentouli, with the majority party of Mr. Sgouros, surprised a lot. Could [please] explain us where this success comes from?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    I hope that it surprised in a positive way. What counts more for me is the trust my fellow citizens showed to me and for this, I thank them from my heart. With a lot of work, personal contact, and faith to the common vision of our party, I supported the Head [of the Attica Region], Mr. G. Sgouros and to the struggle to claim the Attica we worth. The election result justified our common attempt and gives us strength to continue, so as to promote Attica and to solve efficiently the problems of our region.<\/p>\n

    1. Would it be too much to ask you to present yourself? Besides, you are fellow [journalist].<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Just recently, in 2010, I concluded my Ph.D. in Sociology at Panteion University (The British Press in Greek-Turkish relations), while I have a masters\u2019 [degree] in International Journalism (broadcast) at City University London (the Annan Plan for Cyprus). I studied International and European Studies & Translating-Interpreting (German-English) at Salford University Manchester and at Johannes Gutenberg Universit\u00e4t Frankfurt (The Battle of Crete, 1941). During my studies, I was representative of my fellow students and I was member of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ). As journalist, I have work in broadcast, but also in print and electoral Press in Greece and abroad. I was honored to work with internationally recognized media establishments, such as CNN and BBC and to co-operate with journalists-symbols, from whom I have learnt a lot. During my master\u2019s [degree studies], I was co-presenting a current news-entertainment program at the London Greek Radio in London. On my return to Greece, I worked at ANT1 [TV] and elsewhere, whereas nowadays I am special advisor at the Ministry of Education, LifeLong Learning and Religious Affairs. As Dionyssos municipal councilor I was the Municipal Council secretary and I was mainly occupied with Education, Cultural and Youth matters. My sensitivity for my compatriots, with refugee roots drove me to the creation of the Union \u201cAghia Sophia\u201d of the Greeks originated from Constantinople and Asia Minor in Northern Attica (Athens, Greece). I recently participated as a speaker in the congress which was organized by the Ecumenical Federation of Constantinopolitans on the 55th<\/sup> Anniversary of Septemvriana.<\/p>\n

      1. If I am not wrong, you are one the youngest regional councilors, therefore, you [you have] fresher and more pioneer ideas. What are your visions for the Eastern Attica region? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        I vision a strong in terms of development Eastern Attica, friendly to the environment and to its citizens. It is our duty to protect and promote our rich cultural heritage and the varied natural environment of our region. The promotion of the local products and at the same time the facilitation of modern and efficient services in favor of the citizen can contribute in practice, not only to the improvement of our standard of living, but also to the financial uplift of the country [Greece]. With the full implementation of the \u201cKallikratis\u201d program we have a lot to gain towards that direction.<\/p>\n

        1. Regarding the large infrastructure works, what is your position?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Unfortunately, Eastern Attica shows great lack in infrastructures and faces serious environmental issues. The infrastructure works are necessary because of the rapid increase of the population in Eastern Attica, but also for the best [possible] citizen service. Through the implementation of the green regional development, the re-planning of the national production, the smooth development and the battle of unemployment is succeeded, as new job positions emerge. The turning to the innovation, the new technologies, and the quality Education contribute to the achievement of this goal. So, new data emerge at the agricultural sector, the tourism, the constructions etc., while at the same time the environment is protected, via the utilization of the renewable sources of energy. The green regional development can and has to contribute effectively to the exit of the country from the socio-economic crisis.<\/p>\n

          1. After your successful career until now, shall I assume that the political arena has gained you?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            Once my Professor had advised me not to spend my time on things that I do not like \u2013 and that is what I am trying [to do]. I work hard, but with my heart, and for this reason, when I occupy myself with something, I do my best. Not only the social and political sciences, but also journalism, are interrelated and this fascinates me. I decided to occupy myself with civic life as an active citizen, because I believe that through participation and voluntarily contribution, we can succeed a better quality of life and therefore, a better future.<\/p>\n
